JVK's Amiga Links
Amiga, now sold by Gateway, will be developing a new machine - not the same dream machine we anticipated in 1998 - but instead they are linking up with Tao, QNX and Sun and going for it with something new.

I wish them well with AmigaObjects and the new Operating Environment, they have dropped the fast QNX real-time core and gone for a Unix kernal instead, so I don't know if I'll buy an Amiga One.

To keep up with Amiga news, try Amiga.Org, ANN, AmigaCentral, Czech Amiga News, Amiga News, AmiUpdate, Planet Amiga, Status Register, Amigart, PPCRulez!, Amiga Update, AmiSITE, Squid, SlashDot, & Amithyst.

Anyway, my Amiga is still working and very useful! Its responsive OS and elegant text and graphics tools are superb: better than my Mac in some ways and better than Windows in all ways. Now I have AmigaDOS emulated on my Mac, and no longer own a physical machine.

So at the end of 1999, I cannot honestly recommend that anyone buy an Amiga unless they have a specific video or graphics application in mind, or they only need a machine for writing.

For old times sake, I'm leaving the following links up on the web

John V. Keogh, August 2000.

Amiga International
3D, AmiNet, animation, audio, C, CD-ROM, dealers, DTP, emulation, games, graphics, GUI, hardware, ICQ, info, internet, IRC, ISPs, Java, links, mags, misc., music + MIDI, NOSTALGIA, OS, Poland, RC5, rendering, RTG, shareware, shows, software, sound, tools + utilities, word processing, web. Dead links zapped 31 Oct. 99

Meanwhile the current "Classic" Amiga OS has got an upgrade, with the release on CD-ROM of AmigaOS 3.5 in 1999, incorporating the H&P PPC software engine, new icon library... The rest of the links on this page are for the Classic Amiga.

These Amiga links are meant to help you see the wood despite the trees. Please let me know if you want a site listed - especially if you give me a link back - or described differently. Cheers, mateys!

WEB BROWSERS

The big three are Voyager-NG VNG Now!, IBrowse IBrowse and AWeb AWeb Now!

So what does the web look like on an Amiga browser?

JAVA

  • Amiga Java News from the Built With Amiga site.
  • AmJay Java Development Kit implemented on the Amiga by Richard Gansel. "I hope you enjoy my cup of coffee"
  • Kaffe and Guavac Frequently Asked Questions from the GG-Java Mailing List
  • Kaffe AWT beta page - I'm now compiling and running Java on my Amiga with this!
  • Merapi Java Virtual Machine by Haage & Partner. This version still has a licensing problem with Sun, despite the tiny Amiga market. Come on Sun, give us real Java and H&P some income! H&P may release Merapi as freeware.

AMINET
The massive shareware and freeware (program / art / music / samples) resourceAminet

Every two months a CD-ROM is released with one gigabyte (compressed) of new uploads, but if you can't wait the files are accessible online. Each set of files is compressed with LHA and has a .readme file with a description.

In the UK the Imperial College mirror is usually the fastest, or try the UniNa mirror in Naples.

The Aminet Charts lists the most downloaded and highest rated files.

Germany has a nice GUI at AminetGUI. At Clausthal University there is a Full Text Search of all or selected .readme files. The Aminet Gateway provides a different front end for browsers that can't do FTP.

If you want to use FTP, the main Aminet site is at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and there are local mirrors at Paderborn University in Germany and many other sites.

The CUCUG used to maintain a list of AmiNet mirrors world-wide.
