AMINET
The massive shareware and freeware (program / art / music / samples)
resource
Every two months a CD-ROM is released with one gigabyte (compressed)
of new uploads, but if you can't wait the files are accessible
online. Each set of files is compressed with LHA and has a .readme
file with a description.
In the UK the Imperial College mirror is usually the fastest, or try the UniNa mirror in Naples.
The Aminet Charts lists the most downloaded and highest rated files.
Germany has a nice GUI at AminetGUI. At Clausthal University there is a Full Text Search of all or selected .readme files. The Aminet Gateway provides a different front end for browsers that can't do FTP.
If you want to use FTP, the main Aminet site is at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and there are local mirrors at Paderborn University in Germany and many other sites.
The CUCUG used to maintain a list of AmiNet mirrors world-wide.
